Royal Navy Stoneware Rum Flagon in Wicker – 6

Encased in wicker, with two handles and painted with single red stripe around its waist, a stoneware rum flagon from the Royal Navy. Jars like this would be how the rum was supplied to the Warships where it would be ceremoniously poured into the rum-tubs.

There is a debate as to whether the red stripe denoted that the rum was duty free or whether it distinguished it from vinegar which was also transported in jars like this. Rum, for the daily ration, was supplied to Naval vessels and shore establishments by the Victualling Yards. The purpose of the wicker being to provide protection from damage to the stone jar.

This ‘Flagon 6’ is the thicker wicker style used in the War-Time. Some might say a little scruffy, experts would say character and consulate with age and experience. Please study pics.
