New Zealand Shipping Company

Six Soup Spoons 1910’s.

This heavily silver plated set of 6 soup spoons have the clear and distinct early ‘Houseflag’ logo of the New Zealand Shipping Company on every piece.

The spoons measure approximately 175mm in length, just under 7”.

They have seen quite a bit of action and have the odd surface scratch. They have been polished in-house here yet patina has not been compromised, but the use is evident and shows their more than 100 years of age.

They were manufactured by the world-renown Mappin and Webb silversmiths (whose date marks are not consistent) Because of their design and old logo, they probably date to the turn of the century to the early 1910’s.

The New Zealand Shipping Company was one of the great “British” passenger and cargo liner companies, formed in New Zealand in January 1873 by a group of local businessmen. It started as a line of sailing vessels involved with the carriage of emigrants and then ventured in the carriage of frozen meat. It went on to become one of the biggest passenger liner companies between Great Britain and New Zealand until it was merged with P&O in 1973.
