Large Royal Navy 2 Gallon Rum Flagon C. 1958 No.1

Beautiful charming salt glazed jar for the ‘Grog’ issue to enlisted ratings dated 1958. Produced in large numbers for the domestic market but the Royal Navy ones are very rare these days.

The manufacturer’s name is impressed into the earthenware ‘GOVANCROFT POTTERY GLASGOW’ along with the date and MOD broad arrow mark.

The daily Naval issue of ‘Grog’ (part water, part rum), began in the 18th century as a way of making water on-board RN vessels,(often rancid due to its long-time storage), more palatable and the Enlisted Ratings were given a daily tot, a practice that continued in the Royal Navy until it was stopped in August 1970.
